A truly international child, Nikki Begg was conceived in India, born in England, spent her first few years in the Bahamas and Bermuda, then attended school back in England. Naturally, the globetrotting upbringing allowed her to indulge her imagination.

Ms. Begg and her three siblings “were pretty much brought up by a series of nannies,” prompting young Nikki to amuse herself with an imagined “fictitious world with very few parameters; a world where anything and everything was possible and the only boundaries were that of my imagination.” A less taxing mental feat would be imagining how that little girl, refusing all limits, grew up to be one of Bermuda’s most acclaimed wedding planners.

“One of the best parts is this belief that anything is possible,” Ms. Begg tells us. “It’s just about ‘how can I make this happen?’” Don’t just take her word for it—11 years since the inception of Ms. Begg’s two companies, Bermuda Bride and Petals, she has worked with nearly 1,000 weddings and now receives more than 500 annual inquiries.

The formation of Ms. Begg’s wedding planning company came as a result of her own rocky nuptial arrangements. “I had arranged my own wedding in England and the planning part was disastrous,” she says. “I had no idea where to find anything I wanted, the options were endless, but it’s a huge leap of faith to trust an advert – they were all selling the same thing. I was beyond stressed.”

Through the stress—and a driver losing his way en route to the church—the wedding came together smoothly. And then, at the end of 1999, Ms. Begg did it all again, this time for a friend of a friend.

“I had no idea what I was doing, but once I began, I developed an unshakeable belief that I could do destination weddings better than it was presently being done,” Ms. Begg says. “Weddings created a la carte, rather than as a package.”

She was soon off to the races with a certification, a Bermuda Bride website, business cards, and 67 weddings planned in the first year. “And not a lot of sleep,” she hastens to add.

The formation of Petals followed naturally. Flowers continually threw the largest monkey wrench into Ms. Begg’s all-encompassing wedding vision—she wanted to be as meticulous with the presentation and quality and provenance of her weddings’ flora as she was with every other detail. “The idea for Petals began the day the wedding flowers were delivered and, on the boutonniere, instead of real foliage, was a silk leaf,” Ms. Begg says. “I found the person I felt was the best floral designer on the island, Marguerite Clark, and we’ve been creating beautiful designs ever since.”

From that point forward, Bermuda Bride and Petals set a certain bar for weddings on the island. Ms. Begg was told numerous times—and overheard a handful more times—that she was the “bridezilla” version of wedding planners.

“I disagree,” Ms. Begg contends. “If it was your wedding, wouldn’t you want someone there to ensure that the day was exactly what you thought it would be; in fact, that it exceeded your expectations? I am hired to represent my client. I want to get it right. I am not too good at ‘no’ without reason. Instead, I respond with, ‘Well, show me how can we make it work.’” This enduring sense of possibility and the refusal to accept roadblocks lead to a lot of “uphill battles” for Ms. Begg across the years. The upside? She’s struggled against nearly every challenge a Bermuda wedding has to offer. She is, in the truest sense, a veteran of her craft.

“I have worked with many, many of the service providers and most, if not all, of the locations,” she says. “I recognize the strong points in each. I have learned to truly listen to and get to the bottom of what my client is looking for and then work to find the best complement.”

Petals and Bermuda Bride strive to integrate signature local essences into the alluring destination weddings. “One of the reasons that people come here is for that island flavor,” Ms. Begg says. “Our absolute priority is understanding the couple’s concept; how they imagined their wedding day would unfold.”

One of Ms. Begg’s favorite suggestions is to welcome wedding parties with a trip onto the water. “Whether it’s a luxury motor yacht or a sexy sailboat, there is no other way to see the island than by water,” she says. “It’s almost a surreal experience for guests to have left the madness of their home city and the stress of travel behind and end the day barefoot on a deck, drinking a rum swizzle the same color as the fat, fat sun as it melts into the horizon.”

It also helps that Ms. Begg seems to genuinely love the island. “It’s a hard place to leave!” she admits.

Ms. Begg and her employees are always on site for weddings and constantly available for clients, but they shy away from the spotlight some planners seem to love. “I prefer that we are there and work behind the scenes, always one step ahead,” she says. The Bermuda Bride and Petals feedback is, unsurprisingly, glowing. One intensely demanding bride piled on seemingly impossible request after seriously seemingly impossible request.

And lo and behold, “At the end of the wedding she offered me a job,” Ms. Begg says. “She had several homes and needed someone to organize her life. While highly flattered, I respectfully declined.” Ms. Begg did, however, end up working with several of the clients’ friends’ weddings.

Now, 11 years strong into the story of Petals and Bermuda Bride, Ms. Begg relies increasingly on her ace team. “I hire the best people I can afford and let them do their job,” she says. “Just because I have been a wedding planner for a decade and think I know my stuff doesn’t mean that another team member can’t offer a different perspective or solution. I thrive on new ideas and challenges.” As part of moving forward rather than treading water, Ms. Begg enlisted her son, Alex Masters, for a beautifully redesigned website for Petals. And now she’s mulling experiencing some of the adventure she creates for her clients.

“I am going to set everything up so that I can work remotely three months of the year,” she says. “To continue to run Bermuda Bride and Petals with passion, I need to feed my soul. I want to continue to be inspired by the smallest thing, to be exposed to different ways of life, tweak it and apply that to what I do. But most importantly, after spending years of helping couples create their own memories, I want to start creating memories of my own.” Husbands-and-wives-to-be can rest assured that Nikki Begg’s plan will not involve a dip in her companies’ services. Ms. Begg’s favorite maxim pushes her daily: “Loyalty is the lack of something better.” She staunchly refuses to get fussed about what her competitors are up to, contending that if Bermuda Bride and Petals “stay focused on our product, we recognize what the client is looking for, constantly look for ways to improve and expand our services, be the best in our field, work within the budget and then ship it,” then prospective clients will be hardpressed to find that “something better.”

You’ve chosen the most romantic place on earth for your destination wedding, and whether you opt for a formal affair in an opulent ballroom, a barefoot bash on a coral pink sand beach, or something in between, you’ve come to just the right place for wedding dreams come true!

The good news is that your Bermuda wedding can be as individual as the two of you, and your choices are endless when it comes to deciding on the perfect venue to fit your style. The not-so-good-news is that it may be difficult to make the choice! Miles of beaches, quaint British charm, and a moderate climate make Bermuda a wedding-friendly locale any time of year.

One of the many perks of having your wedding at the charming Fourways Inn in Paget, are the choices that await you! Choose from private and semi-private rooms to accommodate from two to 100 or take over the whole restaurant for up to 250 guests. According to Andreas Detzer, manager at the Fourways, “These rooms can be decorated your own way, but our rooms have so much charm the way they are, it really isn’t necessary!” Fourways prides itself on being a charming private home with none of the commercial feeling you might find elsewhere. “You are at home and we are your family for the day,” beams Mr. Detzer.

For an outdoor affair, Fourways offers the Rose Garden with a beautiful Pergola and traditional Bermuda Moon Gate, which brings a couple luck when they walk through it. The Palm Garden is a soft-colored, tented area with large sliding doors that allow you to be outdoors without concern for the weather. Fourways also goes the extra mile with their in-house wedding consultant and event planner, Mimi Belboda who doesn’t charge for her services, and is with you every s tep of the way.

Destination weddings can be planned around a get-away for you and your guests. Picture this four-day wedding celebration scenario at the Fairmont Southampton, located on the highest point in Bermuda: you arrive on Thursday to a welcome reception with cocktails, wine and cheese. On Friday night, you have your rehearsal dinner at one of the Fairmont’s eight restaurants, followed by a movie on the Great Sound Lawn with a dessert reception and popcorn, of course! The big day includes a cocktail reception and wedding dinner, all culminating in your wedding brunch on Sunday. According to expert wedding planner, Wendy Rukstalis, the Fairmont Southampton has a “… venue to suit every bride––from those who want to dip their feet in the ocean and walk in the sand to those who like a more classic setting in a garden to those who would enjoy a simple sunset view.” This full service, luxury resort has plenty to keep your guests busy––from the Fairmont Southampton Golf Course, to jet skiing, scuba diving, or simply lounging on the beach.

Are you the dreamy beach wedding type? Imagine saying ‘I do’ with a stunning view of the South Shore at Coco Reef’s Upper Beach overlooking their East and West beaches. This beautiful raised beach area is perfect for a ceremony where the sound of the surf and stretch of pink sand is your décor. If you would prefer grass to sand between your toes, consider their West Cliff Lawn where vows can be exchanged under exotic palm trees with a view of the ocean. Especially suited for dinners, BBQs and cocktail parties is Coco Reef’s Tamara’s Terrace. With its Spanish tile floor and white balustrades overlooking the spectacular South Shore, it has to be one of the Island’s best spots for dining and dancing. Coco Reef also offers High Point, a ‘D’ shaped sundeck adjacent to their pool area where you can take in the lovely hotel grounds and the ocean–– a “great spot to enjoy cocktails before dinner,” adds General Manager, Lyle Pauls. Looking for an intimate inside celebration? Try Café Coco, their Bermudez Room, or the Library.

Seven minutes from Hamilton, Bermuda’s charming capital, is Elbow Beach with more fabulous views of the South Shore. Elbow Beach, as a Mandarin Oriental managed property, offers you a range of possibilities––all with high levels of service excellence. Thinking about an indoor wedding with a Bermuda feel? The Lido Restaurant, with its private use nightclub, The Deep, is just the right choice, but then again, so is the beautiful Bermuda Room with its cozy fireplace. Located above beautiful Elbow Beach, the newly renovated Lido provides an innovative menu based around local seafood with Mediterranean touches. A wedding celebration at Elbow Beach will ensure a variety of culinary options as well, since there is also poolside dining at Blue Point, casual bistro style dining at Mickey’s Bistro, and sushi, tapas, and after dinner drinks at Sea Breeze.

Outdoors, enjoy the majestic views from the hotel’s Ocean Terrace, or say your I dos under a sky full of stars under a tent on the Marina lawn. Wedding planner Ginny Masters of Weddings with Panache, Elbow Beach Hotel’s preferred on-site wedding planning company, calls Elbow Beach “an upscale, elegant property with that wonderful twist of ‘I’m in Bermuda and right on the beach!’”

Elbow Beach has a number of wedding packages available that are all designed to take the complexity out of planning your nuptials. These packages are all inclusive of fees, gratuities, and include food and beverages. Ms. Masters tells all brides when they request a package that “all weddings are customized and tailored to what you want ––feel free to mix and match features, line-through, and add to, and we’ll re-price immediately.”

With all the pressure of planning a wedding, who wouldn’t want to consider an enthralling oceanfront hideaway where you can feel like the resort belongs entirely to you? At Rosewood Tucker’s Point you can expect luxury accommodations, exclusive venues on their 220 acres of pristine beachfront, and wonderful experiences. Imagine a candlelit rehearsal dinner in their private Wine Room. Envision a magical ceremony on their beautifully manicured Croquet Lawn with guests flowing into the Poolside Cabanas where you can dine al fresco in brightly colored cabanas, or under a pergola with a softly cushioned banquette. Picture your ceremony on the beach and then enjoy a spectacular vista of the Atlantic Ocean at the Horizon Pool or the Fountain Pool at the Beach Club, where fountains of water arch over the pool and Italian string lights illuminate the setting.

To accommodate more formal weddings of up to 270 people, the Camden Ballroom offers the utmost in privacy while their staff delivers personal attention. The Golf Club also offers a variety of options from the casual Grille Room & Bar to the grand Ballroom and Terrace with panoramic views of Castle Harbor. Rosewood Tucker’s Point truly sets a captivating stage for a Bermuda destination wedding.

Yet another romantic retreat, is The Reefs, with an intimate Bermuda atmosphere. Built over the rocks at the very tip of the property, Caso’s Point provides a breathtaking backdrop of sea and sky. Their two-tiered Deck at Caso’s Point is their most popular wedding location. You can also say “I do” with a ceremony on their secluded beach––wonderfully romantic! The Terrace is a lovely spot at the top of the cliff overlooking the Atlantic, with stunning views to complement your new marriage. The Reefs offers customized wedding packages and their talented pastry chef is happy to design the wedding cake of your dreams. They will also connect you with other local vendors that will make your day complete. Tucked away into the limestone cliffs, is Coconuts, a relaxed, open-air setting.

Roystons, with its fireplace and charming beamed ceiling offers a warm and inviting location to celebrate. Toast to the years ahead in the Wine Room surrounded by Bermuda stone and more than 1,200 bottles of wine tucked into mahogany. Wonderfully romantic and definitely unforgettable.

Rehearsal dinners, bachelor parties, and bachelorette festivities are something else to think about when tying the knot in Bermuda. You might want to try something a little different for these get-togethers, and Bermuda has some great spots!

Hidden away, but so worth finding, is Mad Hatter’s Restaurant, a real jewel in Hamilton. There is both indoor and outdoor courtyard seating and the food is remarkable. Mad Hatter’s is a fun atmosphere for a civilized rehearsal dinner and quite an entertaining spot for a pre-wedding bash with your wedding party. The restaurant is adorned with all kinds of crazy hats and guests actually wear them. You can watch the chefs prepare your dinner, and they too wear funny hats. Mad Hatter’s is the place to consider for intimate wedding gatherings with its imaginative food, excellent service, and enjoyable atmosphere!

Looking for a place to have a unique bachelor or bachelorette party? Café Cairo, the Egyptian-themed restaurant and bar in Hamilton is your spot. This out of the ordinary restaurant serves traditional Middle Eastern fare in an atmosphere that combines Moorish furnishings, inventive food, art, and music.

Choose to have your party in one of their three different areas––the tent, where you’ll feel like you’re in an oasis, the Casbah, where you can unwind and dine al fresco, or stop by for drinks in the lavishly decorated bar. Kick up your heels on the dance floor, or relax in the Hookah (water-pipe) lounge. After 10 p.m. Cafe Cairo gets a new life as a vibrant dance club…and you and your wedding party can celebrate until 3 a.m. If you want to spice up any venue in your own style, look to Especially For You Linen, where owner Sheena Smith will provide you with linens and other stylish necessities for your wedding and any parties and barbeques leading up to your big day.

Sheena says, “For destination weddings, people like tropical colors that remind them of Bermuda, like turquoise and coral and more of the vibrant colors that blend with ocean and sand.” If you already have a specific idea of what you want, Sheena recommends bringing in a swatch of fabric to make the process smoother. You can even have your florist come and try out flowers there! But if you’re open to ideas, Especially For You Linen will soon have a showroom available at their grand opening, so you can play around with the different fabric and colors until you find your perfect match. “People like to feel, touch and see what they are getting,” Sheena says. “ I wanted to have a location where all the tablecloths are hanging and people can have a full display. You can see your options on the table and in different lighting.”

Sheena advises that you set aside a minimum 2-3 weeks before the wedding to book your linens – the earlier you book it, the better chance for you to get what you want. Sheena also likes to give each wedding couple her undivided attention, so be sure to book your one-on-one appointment with her!

Choosing the right wedding venue is probably one of the most important decisions any bride and groom will make. The perfect venue sets the theme of your wedding and ultimately brings together the entire day. When it comes to romantic wedding locations, there is no place better than Bermuda, so you’re already on the right track. Wherever you decide to begin your life together, it’s sure to be unforgettably romantic in magical Bermuda.

Bring Back a Bit of Bermuda

It would be terribly unfair of you to come to the beautiful island of Bermuda and not bring something uniquely Bermudian for someone special back home. So many one-of-a-kind gifts are available, and the following vendors can steer you in the right direction.

Young entrepreneur Alexandra Mosher has been in the business of studio art jewelry since 2005. She stumbled upon her passion for designing jewelry at a very young age. While redesigning her own jewelry box one day, she realized she wanted to channel her creative energy into something more sculptural. From this was born the Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery, where each jewelry piece is meticulously designed by hand using the finest jewelry-grade resin, pink coral sand, and high quality sterling silver.

Alexandra does everything from casting pieces to carving wax, thus ensuring that each end piece is unique. Alexandra can also take the time to help you co-create and co-design custom jewelry inspired by Bermuda’s natural beauty. “All my pieces are art jewelry,” she says, “I do a lot with gemstones. Client favorites are my pieces that are carved in wax and cast in silver. My most popular pieces are the ones found in the Bermuda Reef Collection, and the Caviar Collection is a close second. With those pieces, I use drops of wax and build up the pieces. They are really organic and funky pieces.”

With clients starting to amass her collections and an increasing number of brides interested in innovative and unique pieces of jewelry to accentuate their wedding dresses, Alexandra Mosher’s Studio Art Jewellery has grown exponentially in recent years. If you check out her website at www.alexandramosher.com, it’s easy to see why.

Anthony’s

For the past eighteen years, men have been flocking to Anthony’s to get their formal attire in Bermuda. Run by Anthony Easton, the centrally located store has a large stock of classic and designer tuxedos for sale and rental.

Anthony Easton is also the host of Bermuda’s Wedding Portfolio, an annual bridal fashion show that takes place in January, which is part of how he stays on top of upcoming wedding trends. Anthony’s carries well-known brands to include Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, After Six, and Fumagalli. For the groom, Anthony recommends the traditional two-button, single-breasted tuxedo. As a new style, Anthony says that designers are now adding a European flair to the neckline.

Besides tuxedos, Anthony’s also specializes in wedding products, cake tops, guest books, backdrops, and invitations.

Bermuda Craft Market

At the Bermuda Craft Market in the Royal Naval Dockyard, you will find a diverse selection of original Bermuda Crafts ideal for that special present. Established in 1987 by the Chamber of Commerce as a unique outlet for arts and crafts in Bermuda, it is now a registered charity.

The Bermuda Craft Market is a big open room with several stations where individual artisans demonstrate their artistry in handcrafted
candles, cedar, ceramics, paintings, decoupage, dolls, glass jewelry and more.

Llewellyn Emery is one of the main artisans of the Bermuda Craft Market. For 53 years and counting, his specialty has been working with cedar. Llewellyn’s cedar work items are made from local Bermuda cedar and are turned into candlesticks, jewelry boxes, bowls, table lamps, bookends, salt and pepper grinders, clocks and a number of other items.

“One of the most popular stations,” Llewellyn says, “is the one where the artisan makes banana dolls using all natural banana leaves and floral. A close second is the station manned by a gentleman and his wife who make jewelry using anything from gold and semiprecious gems to wire and stainless steel.“

Of note, the Bermuda Craft Market now offers a free winter program November-March where artists lead hands-on sessions with anyone who wants to learn how to make some of the displayed arts and crafts to then take home with them.

If you are looking to send gifts back home that are genuinely made in Bermuda, come to the Bermuda Craft Market to browse dozens of hand-made craft items.

The Bermuda Perfumery

The Bermuda Perfumery carries the gift of fragrance––suitable for everyone. Many of us think of giving fragrances as a highly personal gift––and it can be, but it really depends on the fragrance you choose. Owner, Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone suggests giving fragrances that are “mainstream and easy,” such as those in their unisex Water collection, if you are unsure. “You can’t go wrong with Fresh Water or South Water!” according to Mrs. Ramsay-Brackstone. If you are looking for something more masculine, she recommends 32° North (the latitude of Bermuda). For women, Coral is the most popular fragrance, with tender notes of wild freesia, ginger, juicy clementine and rose nectar. The Bermuda Perfumery also carries “Fragrance Libraries,” where your attendants can sample all of the scents in a beautifully boxed set of nine vials to find the one that suits them best. Mrs. Ramsay-Brackstone also mentions that a recent trend has been for brides to select fragrances as party favors and have individual vials for each guest on tables. Visit The Bermuda Perfumery and its quaint, romantic setting in historic Stewart Hall in St. George’s for the perfect gift of fragrance.

Blanc Limited

This bridal salon makes the sometimes trying process of finding the perfect dress seem effortless. With its plush interior design, vast 1600 square foot space, and amazingly personal customer service, “a bride can come in and feel like she’s really being catered to,” says owner Milika Seymour. Blanc Limited strives to eliminate the stress by “aiming to make the experience very service oriented. Once you make an appointment with us,” says Seymour, “you’re going to feel like you’re the only one there.”

At Blanc Ltd., Milika Seymour, also offers accessories including tiaras, haircombs, and jewelry that will surely make gift giving easy. Ms Seymour sees a trend in statement jewelry. For example, she says, “Bold cuffs have been very popular lately, as opposed to more dainty pieces.” She adds, “We carry many beautiful pieces that we change all the time, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to look glamorous!” These things make beautifully special gifts for a bride.

The Butterfield Bank

Butterfield is an ideal place to look for financing gifts including weekend getaways, honeymoons, and even wedding and engagement rings. One might consult the bank on smart money management on what can often be an expensive affair. Representatives at the Butterfield often meet with couples looking for financial consultation on such matters as purchasing a home or car, or even help with savings and investment plans. A practical gift that recognizes the challenges of starting a family in today’s economy is a savings account or investment plan.

In addition, Butterfield offers credit cards in partnership with two major airlines-American Airlines and British Airways. When you make retail purchases using the Butterfield/AAdvantageR MasterCard®, you’ll earn AAdvantage® miles towards American Airlines flights. When you use the Butterfield Visa Platinum® Card for purchases, you’ll earn BA miles towards British Airways flights. Use one of these reward Cards to make all of your wedding purchases, and start planning your dream honeymoon.

So you have spent all this time shopping for the dress, rings, shoes etc. Choosing the fragrance you will wear on your BIG day is an important accessory, which will need to be chosen with style and careful attention.

So you have spent all this time shopping for the dress, rings, shoes etc. Choosing the fragrance you will wear on your BIG day is an important accessory, which will need to be chosen with style and careful attention.

Try to find a fragrance that matches your style and personality. There is no secret way to find exactly what suits you and your skin. Do not let anyone dictate what you should wear. Your fragrance should reflect your mood and only you know what makes you feel beautiful.

I recommend that you try as many fragrances as possible and experiment with designers’ fragrances, but also with original niche fragrance houses. Small niche fragrance houses usually work with high quality essential oils and tend to do very different scents compared to what you find in department stores.

It is important that you try fragrances on your own skin and that your fiancé approves. Ask for samples to try the fragrance on your skin in your own environment. If you do not like it right away, go wash your hands. When it comes to fragrance, I believe in love at first sight! It should please you completely and become part of who you are. That being said, make sure Mr. Perfect approves, as you want him to love everything about you on your wedding day.

Each fragrance belongs to a family of scent which I will explain below. Most of us prefer one family of scent over another. Some of us will own ten different fragrances, and most likely nine of them will belong to the same family. Just like colors or clothing styles, we each have our preferences. Here are some of the most popular families:

Floral – For the romantic girl and by far the most popular family. There are a lot of fragrances in this family, from the complex floral bouquet, to what we call soliflore (only one flower is the main ingredient). Are you more of a lily of the valley, a jasmine, a rose, a gardenia, a tuberose or an orange flower.

Citrus – For the sporty and natural woman. These fragrances are perfect for a warm day and if you are having an outdoor and daytime venue. My only concern with citrus fragrances is that they are very volatile, so make sure you bring your fragrance with you to reapply your scent during the day.

Oriental – For the sexy woman. These fragrances sure make a statement and are fantastic for evening or winter weddings. Be gentle wearing an oriental, as it may be overwhelming. These fragrances tend to be woody with vanilla and spices. An oriental fragrance usually stays on skin for a long time.

One key point is to make sure that your perfume will not compete with your flower bouquet. Work with your florist to make sure you have the right combination. Sometimes those Casablanca lilies can take over the floor if you are not careful. Many of the roses, calla lilies and orchids used by florists are unscented and can be a great choice.

On your wedding day, put a few drops of your chosen fragrance in your bath water. Layer your scent with a matching lotion and try to wear “perfume “if you can as it will last longer on your skin. The great thing with pure perfume is that only a drop on your pulse points will diffuse magnificently for many hours. Try to keep your perfume in its original box and store it in a cool and dark place. This way, you will be able to keep it fresh for a good five to eight years after your wedding.

When you apply your perfume, be sure to apply it directly on your skin and before putting on any clothing. Fragrance can also damage jewelry, especially pearls, so keep your scent away from important pieces and be especially careful when touching up your fragrance after you’re dressed. If you’ll want to reapply your scent during the wedding, ask the salesperson where you purchase your fragrance for couple sample vials. She’ll be more than happy to accommodate you for your wedding day!

Every bride remembers the fragrance she wore on her wedding day. It is a very special accessory that you cannot leave to a last minute decision. Many years after your wedding, a whiff of that fragrance will take you right back to your special day. I have kept my bottle preciously since I married 11 years ago and although its content is now spoiled, it still brings me right back to when I walked down the aisle.

As one of the world’s most beautiful islands, Bermuda is filled with a variety of amazing gardens and flowers. Here, florists play an integral role in Bermuda wedding ceremonies.

The combination of colorful, fragrant flowers tied together in the following are some of the best florists on the Island.

Just Roses

Carrying a large variety of flowers directly from Holland, Just Roses is a unique full-service floral and gift shop that prides itself on providing tailored services for their clientele. The owner, Julie Mayor, has been in the floral business for over two decades. “People love our modern and contemporary designs,” she says, “our tropical flowers tend to mostly be used in them. Also, orchids are making a big comeback; more brides want them since they are exotic and unusual.”

Reliable and friendly, customers return to Just Roses because they know the quality is good and the flowers will stand up. Julie explains, “Over the years, we have built a good name and reputation for ourselves. The quality of flowers we get from Holland are of much better quality – they are bigger, and there are more blooms on a stem. If you compare a lily from Florida to Holland, the difference is phenomenal.”

With experienced floral designers, you can trust Just Roses to produce floral art to specifically suit your requirements – from traditional and classic to contemporary or modern design.

Gardine’s

After living in New Orleans for over 45 years, Gardine Gibbons decided to move back home to Bermuda. She brought her passion for flowers with her. Gardine is now going on twenty years in the floral business and enjoys every minute of it.

If a wedding couple needs help choosing the best flowers, they rely on Gardine to lend her expert advice: “I can tell a bride which flowers are durable and which are too delicate to hold up through their wedding day.” Gardine’s customers can request and obtain nearly any flower they wish, whether they are seasonal or not. For wedding bouquets, Gardine states that gerbers, orchids, and gardenias are popular, as are bridal roses.

When asked what makes Gardine’s unique from other Bermudian florists, Gardine answered, “I think what makes us stand out is that we do wonderful novelty products, such as fruit and gift baskets. Our designs are unique, and we are mostly traditional, but we also incorporate contemporary styles.”

Whatever your needs are, the friendly florists at Gardine’s can service you – pleasing the customer is their top priority.

Designer Flowers

Located in Southampton and Hamilton, Designer Flowers has a talented team providing exquisite floral designs for every occasion. They provide quality flowers from around the world in unique arrangements with enduring beauty and freshness.

For the upcoming season, owner Lisa Holroyd says, “More people are moving towards the modern and intricate bouquet rather than the traditional. They want the European look, and there are lots of purples and blues in terms of color.”

Designer Flowers also has extensive experience in themed weddings and interpreting particular styles into stunning designs. “Since no two brides are the same,” Lisa says, “we tailor each wedding to each individual bride. Our staff is made up of different cultures and backgrounds so we can provide a variety of styles. Our florists from Spain, for example, bring a European flair.”

At Designer Flowers, you will find an experienced team of florists that prides itself on their creative talents and great attention to detail.

Choosing Gifts For Your Attendants: Unwrapping What Bermuda Has To Offer

They’ve amassed sky-high cell phone bills talking about table settings and flowers and the latest drama with your in-laws. They’ve paid the bill for over-the-top bachelor parties and feigned interest in cheesy shower games. They’ve ordered the mauve crepe de chine dresses and agreed (to your face, at least) that oh yes, we can definitely wear these again.

The point is you owe your bridesmaids and your groomsmen. They are your friends, brothers, sisters, and siblings-in-law, and you couldn’t have done this whole wedding thing without them. You can thank your attendants with a golf outing, a day at the spa, or with classes at a local yoga studio. Or, if you want to go the more tangible route, give them gifts they can use again and for years to come. Bermuda has plenty to offer in this department!

Once you’ve taken care of your wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses at either Occasions Bridal and Formal or Blanc Limited Bridal Boutique, look further at these two places because you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that they also carry some great ideas for making your wedding party smile. Not only will you find everything you need in the way of bridal gowns and wedding party attire, but you will also find that accessories perfect for giving are available. Khaliah Nisbett of Occasions offers some inspired gift choices with the Bel Aire bridal line which includes graceful tiaras, hairpins made of freshwater pearls and sparkly crystals, and beautiful silver brooches. Nisbett recommends the En Vogue line of stunning bracelets––sure to be hit with your wedding party for years to come! At Blanc Ltd., Milika Trott-Seymour, offers accessories including tiaras, haircombs, and jewelry that will surely make gift giving easy. Ms Seymour sees a trend in statement jewelry. For example, she says, “Bold cuffs have been very popular, as opposed to more dainty pieces.” She adds, “We carry many beautiful pieces that we change all the time, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to look glamorous!”

After you’ve gotten your groom and his men outfitted in styling formal wear from Anthony’s of Bermuda, check out their personalized cuff links as a gift-giving option for your groomsmen. These are a traditional and trusty way to thank your attendants, offering superior style they can wear with a tuxedo–– or later on with their business wardrobe. Your groomsmen will show off their fashion savvy when they step out in these impressive groomsmen cufflinks from Anthony’s!

For more unexpected attendant gifts, try the selection from the local artisans and craftsmen at the Bermuda Craft Market. According to Llewellyn Emery, the Craft Market offers the largest collection of local handmade products––everything from jewelry and needlework to prints, candles, and ceramics. For brides and grooms wishing to give gifts with some Bermuda flavor, the Craft Market has so much to offer. Mr. Emery recommends the handcrafted cedar trinket boxes in smaller sizes to hold earrings or cufflinks or in the larger sizes for your maid of honor and best-man. The Bermuda Craft Market also carries handcrafted wooden “Friendship Goblets,” with a single ring loosely attached to the stem. Other unique Bermudian gift ideas are beautiful painted sea glass and china or distinctive Bermuda silver charms.

Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery offers one-of-a-kind pieces that will put the twinkle back in your bridesmaids’ eyes if ever it was lost. Hand fabricated art jewelry, inspired by the motifs and colors of Bermuda, in silver and gold with precious and semi-precious gemstones are sure to please. Alexandra’s work teeters on the line between art, fashion, and sentimental gift. Ms. Mosher says she fully appreciates the sheer excitement and passion behind planning a wedding. “And of course,” says Ms. Mosher, “The most crucial part of that process is making sure the bride looks absolutely magnificent on the day.” What better way to adorn yourself and your bridesmaids on your special day than with a Bermuda-made art-jewelry piece that will be treasured as a truly memorable keep sake. Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery offers a beautiful collection of gift ideas to ease your search for the perfect bridesmaid present. These will not only tie in with your theme, but are classic enough to be worn forever. And as Ms. Mosher reminds us, “Don’t forget your flower girls, for we can adorn the teeniest of tots with a touch of artistic sparkle.” In addition, Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bridesmaids Packages are available for any brides buying their wedding jewelry. “We are happy to offer a range of discounts on bridesmaids gifts,” says Ms. Mosher.

The Bermuda Perfumery carries the gift of fragrance––suitable for all members of your party. Many of us think of giving fragrances as a highly personal gift––and it can be, but it really depends on the fragrance you choose. Some are personal, suited especially for your romantic sister-in-law or your sporty best friend, (see article on page 29) but with fragrances from The Bermuda Perfumery, you can be sure to find a scent that fits your bridesmaids and groomsmen perfectly.
If it’s a personal and practical attendant gift you’re after, look no further than Pulp and Circumstance. Kristi Grayston offers a selection of gifts that will work for all members of your wedding party––bridesmaids and groomsmen. Ms. Grayson says, “Beautiful frames that can be personalized with an engraved silver plaque are very popular,” and she says that Filofax® organizers that are personalized have also been all the rage. In addition to personalized and practical gifts, Pulp and Circumstance is also the place to find an eclectic range of Bermuda-themed stationary, quality pens, and unique journals.

An important stop on the way to any of your wedding purchases is Butterfield Bank. They, of course, offer a wide range of financial services–– including personal loans, consultations on smart money management, and savings accounts and invest ment plans. In addition, Butterfield Bank offers credit cards in partnership with two major airlines-American Airlines and British Airways. When you make retail purchases using the Butterfield/AAdvantage MasterCard®, you’ll earn AAdvantage® miles towards American Airlines flights. When you use the Butterfield Bank Visa Platinum® Card for purchases, you’ll earn BA miles towards British Airways flights. Use one of these reward Cards to make all of your wedding purchases, and start planning your dream honeymoon!!

Remember, when it comes to giving gifts to your wedding party, there are no rules set in stone. Try not to stress feeling that you need to go beyond your budget to get a big enough gift to honor your attendants. The value of the gift isn’t on the price tag, it’s in the fact that it comes from you, with thought given to who your attendants are.

Brian Murphy proposed to Paige Hunting on a surprise trip to Bermuda in the summer of 2008. “We quickly fell in love with Bermuda’s charm and thought the island’s relaxed beachy feel combined with a bit of English formality suited our personalities,” says Paige.

On May 2, 2009, they married on the island, a splendid party with 64 of their loved ones.
“We wanted a small wedding and thought it would be wonderful to introduce our friends and family to this very special place, as many of our guests had never been to Bermuda before,” Paige says. The planning began in earnest in October 2008, with a trip to Bermuda to convene with wedding planners and consider venues for the big day.
“Cafe Lido was our clear favorite for several reasons,” Paige says, speaking of the gorgeous location overlooking Elbow Beach. “The Marina Terrace was the perfect spot for an outdoor, early evening ceremony as it had beautiful views of the ocean. Our guests were certainly wowed when they arrived.”
Cafe Lido allowed the ceremony to transition smoothly into the reception. Paige and Brian opted for little additional decor as the location’s natural setting was such a sight to behold. “We wanted to host a simple and elegant event where guests could really enjoy the scenery. We held dinner and dancing in Cafe Lido’s open air gazebo, which was the perfect size for our group. Since the weather cooperated, we were able to keep the roof open and see the beautiful night sky,” Paige says. She also speaks highly of Cafe Lido manager Karen Stroeder, citing her professionalism and service.
The Rev. Judith Gardner officiated Paige and Brian’s ceremony. “She was so lovely – very warm and friendly,” Paige says. “We had not had the opportunity to meet in person prior to arriving in Bermuda a few days before the wedding, so we sent her photos and information about us in advance so she could personalize the ceremony.”
Paige and Brian’s nuptials went seamlessly. “I remember being so relaxed and happy during the ceremony,” Paige says. “I wasn’t nervous at all, and it felt so wonderful to have this gorgeous Bermuda sun shining down on us and see all the people I love the most seated before me.”
Between the beauty of the ceremony and the wondrous commotion of the reception, Brian and Paige took a friend’s advice and snuck off for a moment of solitude. They sipped champagne and snacked on hors d’oeuvres. “It gave us a moment to reflect on what an amazing day it had been and gear up for a night of dinner and dancing,” Paige says.
Part of that reflection may have been remembering the cast and crew it took to pull off such a sensational destination wedding. Brian and Paige’s first stop: Linda Mitchell from Bermuda Travel. “We knew that we had to make the wedding weekend travel and
accommodations affordable and convenient for our guests, and Linda’s vast knowledge of Bermuda’s hotels and resorts made our planning much easier. She was a tremendous help to our guests in booking their travel,” Paige says.
Brian and Paige hired Kay-Annie Reid-Young from Kreative Koncepts as their wedding planner. “She was fantastic. It was so reassuring to know she was on the island to help us select vendors and ensure our day would go smoothly. She made us feel at ease with all aspects of the wedding planning,” Paige says. “I remember getting ready to walk down the aisle with my dad before the ceremony and she gave me a big smile and said ‘Don’t worry, you’re ready!’ and I knew that everything was under control in her capable hands.”
Sacha Blackburne handled the day’s photography. “To say she is amazing is an understatement,” Paige says. “She was a dream to work with and produced the most gorgeous wedding photos for us. Sacha made us so at ease and most importantly, made taking all of the photos fun.”

Julie Mayor of Just Roses coordinated the floral side of the festivities. “She was wonderful and made the planning process from New York so easy. The flowers were exactly what I wanted, down to the specific color. My bridal bouquet of pink peonies was just gorgeous,” Paige says. “We did all of our communication by phone and e-mail – we never met in person, and I never even stepped foot in her shop.”
DJ Scott Simons spun tunes at the reception – even though Paige and Brian were so busy before the wedding, they weren’t able to give him a specific playlist. “But he hit the mark with each song. Scott was very easygoing and we completely trusted his judgment on music,” Paige says. “We had to practically drag people off the dance floor, they were having such a good time.”

All 64 guests stayed at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. “Our room logistics were handled by Bior Guigni, who provided us with the most lovely customer service. She went out of her way to ensure we, our families and guests were as comfortable as possible. She was incredibly responsive – we had a question, she had an answer!” Paige says. “I remember when we arrived in Bermuda, a few days before the wedding, she greeted us in the hotel lobby, sat us down at the bar with a gin and tonic and told us to relax and start the celebration! She played a huge role in making our wedding weekend go so smoothly.”

Ivan Smith from On Time Transportation shuttled guests from the hotel to the wedding site. “His service was outstanding – everything was truly ‘on time’ and his enthusiasm for Bermuda was contagious. It was very important for us to ensure our guests had smooth and comfortable travel around the island and Ivan was super,” Paige says.
For each guest, Paige and Brian ordered custom L.L Bean tote bags reading BDA – Bermuda’s airport code – with the date and a pink Bermuda shorts logo. “The Bermuda Tourism Bureau very generously gave us maps, key chains and lapel pins for the bags,” Paige says. “We also printed ‘Facebooks’ that had a photo of each of our guests, their hometown and a funny description of the person so that people could get to know each other better. People loved them.”
For the wedding meal, Paige and Brian “wanted to serve elegant but un-stuffy food and play up Bermuda’s local cuisine.” They hit a home-run with delicious appetizers during cocktail hour, bits like scallops with caramelized pineapple and mini cod-cakes with banana. With dinner came a starter of traditional Bermuda fish chowder or an arugula salad and an entree of fresh catch of the day or beef tenderloin.

And there was the cake, of course. “Cafe Lido’s pastry chef created a beautiful lemon cake with white fondant icing, and was kind enough to wrap a navy and pink – our wedding colors – grosgrain ribbon that we had brought from New York around each tier,” Paige says. “All of the food was delicious and suited our event perfectly.”

All of the wedding vendors worked expertly with Paige and Brian to cultivate a spectacular day. “The reception was a wonderful opportunity to sip champagne, pose for photos with old friends and celebrate the day,” Paige says. “Sacha [Blackburne] took us down to the beach to pose for photos and it was a wonderful feeling to look up at all our guests enjoying cocktails on the terrace during the reception and see that everyone was having a good time.”
The weekend getaway nature of a destination wedding, although something Paige and Brian never envisioned exclusively, completed the experience, making it an event to remember not just for the bride and groom, but for all the family and friends in attendance. “Most weddings go by so fast – a few hours of food and dancing and it’s over,” Paige says. By getting married in Bermuda, we were able to extend our time with our loved ones – all the people we care most about in the world – in one place for an entire weekend.”
