Photo by Sacha Blackburne at Lido Complex

As many of these women have noted, the custom wedding – as opposed to the ‘package’ approach – is rapidly becoming the norm.

Nikki Begg, professional bridal consultant and owner of Bermuda bride founded her business nine years ago. She sought to provide what was at the time, a nearly impossible service: a wedding representing what the bride wanted and nothing she didn’t. The only full-time, Bermuda-based wedding planning company on the island, Bermuda Bride specializes in destination weddings, which allows them to “focus exclusively on the bride and her wedding day” and are always available when you need them.
Not only does Bermuda Bride have excellent relationships with Bermuda vendors of all sorts, it is also preferred by many of the island’s hotels and resorts. Furthermore, the business branched out in 2001 opening a floral company called Petals, as well as a design and rental company, Elements. Through collaboration and complementary services, these companies streamline the planning process. Nikki adds that, while Bermuda Bride specializes mainly in high-end weddings, she and her team are equally enthusiastic to accommodate any budget. “Often the most creative weddings are where we have to come up with viable and exciting solutions,” she explains, citing tight cruise ship schedules as one challenging example.
Speaking of schedules, Nikki urges brides not to let the planning schedule overwhelm them. Her advice is to “decide on your priorities and make those decisions first – they will provide the framework for all the other decision you need to make.” She also councils brides to leave 10% worth of “wiggle-room” in the budget, as things tend to be more expensive, as well as take a bit longer, than expected. Like Kay-Annie Reid Young, Nikki Begg also recommends care in choosing the guest list, pointing out that greater volume translates to greater cost.
When asked about trends Nikki suggests simple elegance, elaborating that, as part of this “overall sense of elegance,” upcoming weddings will also showcase “varying hues of monochromatic colors as the main color way and texture upon texture as the theme.” Nikki, however, also draws her own inspirations from her surroundings, referring to the “deep tangerine sunsets, ocean blues, rich bronzes, and woody greens” which the landscape of Bermuda provides as perfect, vibrant accents to the wedding palate of whites and ivories. “And,” she adds, “the beach theme always, always works.”
In 2010, Bermuda Bride will be reworking its already elegant website, www.bermudabride.com. The new site will provide even more information, including a library of 2009 bouquets, a blog, and a special interactive section for current brides, as well as a forum where past brides can post advice. With so many new things on the horizon, Nikki Begg and her team are more excited than ever to be making great strides in their industry. “There is a tremendous sense of satisfaction in seeing everything come together,” she explains. “Whether we’ve been working on a wedding for 18 months or 18 days, understanding what the couple want, truly want, and then being able to help them achieve that is incredibly important to us.” With over nine years and 800 weddings worth of experience, Bermuda Bride embodies everything necessary “for a wedding day as individual as you.”
Yolanda Furbert loves to organize events. “I’ve been doing this since I was 14,” she says, laughing. “I wasn’t concerned with getting paid at first,” she recalls, “I did it just to do it.”
It is this very passion, which makes her business, To Have And To Hold Wedding and Event Planners, such a success. Yolanda, a certified planner, prides herself on her ability to make her clients feel “as though they are guests at their own event,”
adding that she also likes to “treat every event as if it’s my first,” with the same level of excitement and attention to detail. Specializing in both local and destination weddings, as well as other events, To Have And To Hold offers a professional versatility any bride would value. With an emphasis on client satisfaction, attention to detail, and an eye for the newest trends – lots of purple shades and orchids being a few Yolanda has noticed – To Have And To Hold’s meticulously planned events are sure to exceed expectations. Furthermore, Yolanda’s many connections within the Bermuda community have developed into various partnerships which allow her to offer inclusive wedding packages that provide the DJ, venue, catering, and more.
Yolanda, however, recommends that brides build their own custom weddings from the ground up, explaining that many brides will often choose a set package, only to find things they’d like to change, which complicates planning as well as adding on extra charges. She prefers to begin by sitting down and listening to exactly what each bride wants. The initial session is a free ninety-minute consultation in which Yolanda can speak with the bride about all the options available. In this way, she explains, she can be sure that each wedding is perfectly tailored to the bride’s vision. The business’ website, www.tohaveandtoholdbermuda.com, offers more information, including toll free numbers, and could be your first step toward your very own custom wedding by To Have And To Hold.
Donna Lindo, founder of Class Act Designs, is yet another woman who is dedicated to success. Her business is a multi-faceted, special event coordination company with abundant connections throughout Bermuda. Offering an array of services for all varieties of events, Class Act Designs has the ability to tailor any experience to the desires of the client. Indeed, Donna explains, this broad spectrum of services is one of the greatest strengths of her business. “Whatever you ask for,” she says, in a tone of unassailable confidence, “we can do it.” To this end, all prospective clients will have an initial consultation in which all of their needs and ideas will be discussed, ensuring that the event is customized exactly to their specifications.

Donna’s main advice to brides is simple: start early. In some cases, venues or endors can be booked up to a year, or even longer, in advance. The best way to ensure that a bride has everything she desires on her wedding day is to begin planning with plenty of time. The Class Act Designs website, www.classactdesignsbermuda.com, is an excellent and easy-to-use tool for brides who are just beginning. The site includes a list of services, a photo gallery featuring an array of events, and a testimonial page with a long list of glowing praises.

Some brides approach their wedding day with worries that something may go wrong, and that it will not be the perfect day they have hoped for. This fear, when it comes to working with Class Act Designs, is completely unfounded. This business specializes in, as the tagline promises, “providing the client with an experience that exceeds their expectations,” so brides can rest easy knowing that their special day will be just that, and more. With over twenty years of experience, Donna Lindo is a force to be reckoned with. Wedding mishaps, beware: you’ve met your match.

Speaking of forces to be reckoned with, Kay-Annie Reid Young of Kreative Koncepts also means business. As a certified professional holding customer satisfaction as her highest priority, Kay-Annie’s creativity and ‘outside-the-box’ mentality make her a cutting-edge figure in the world of Bermuda weddings. Her passion for her work leads her to find new ways to add to her already extensive knowledge of the field of wedding and event planning. Her experience prompts her to give brides the advice of staying calm. “Even though it may seem difficult at times, the wedding planner has a wealth of information that allows for couples to not make mistakes.” She adds that brides should always inform their planner of any guests that may be, as she puts it, ‘high risk,’ thereby providing the necessary tools for avoiding any conflicts that may arise throughout the day.

Looking toward the future, Kay-Annie notices several trends, many reflecting the more customized, less traditional approach to which other coordinators have called attention. Many brides are now using the internet instead of printed stationary for invitations, and are planning for more relaxed receptions as opposed to the formal, seated style. Also, many weddings are second, third, or even fourth weddings, challenging what used to be the accepted idea of bride and groom. Most intriguing, Kay-Annie notes, is that many brides are altering the tradition of being ‘given away,’ preferring terminology that more appropriately reflects the strong, independent womanhood of brides today. Another consideration Kay-Annie takes into account is that, in light of today’s economic environment, brides will want to make the most of their budget. Her advice is to focus on making the wedding as memorable and meaningful as possible by inviting those who are dearest to bride and groom, such as family and close friends. “Its O.K. to not have a large wedding just for the sake of having a large wedding,” she adds, understanding that brides have “other dreams and goals” toward which savings can be put.

All advice and savvy planning aside, however, it is clear that Kay-Annie has a supreme commitment to the happiness of her clients. “My favorite part about this industry is the look I get when I see one of my couples, completely relaxed after all the planning, just fully enjoying their wedding without a care in the world. This speaks volumes to me as a planner because it means they have completely put their trust in me and my ability to ensure this moment happens, and this is what motivates me to become a part of their journey.” For more information on how to make Kay-Annie a part of your wedding journey, visit www.kreativekoncepts.biz.

Phyllis Soares of AWESOME! Events also supports the custom approach to wedding planning. She’s noticed that, more often than not, the modern bride has a precise idea of how everything should be laid out on the big day. She adds that “it should be about what the bride wants,” and is committed to achieving everything that might entail, and more – something she is quite capable of, having spent the last year and a half as the chief wedding coordinator at the Nine Beaches Resort in Bermuda.
Phyllis is full of handy tips for brides, cautioning them, among other things, not to forget the small details – such as transportation to and from the airport for guests – that often go unnoticed until the last minute. She also recommends a site visit before the wedding, in order to meet face to face with both coordinator and vendors, and to get an idea of the venue. This recommendation, in particular, is easy to take, as the only thing better than one trip to Bermuda is, of course, two trips to Bermuda. Phyllis adds that she has noticed a trend toward simple elegant style in recent weddings, but that she has also organized a few very unique or unusual weddings – further indication that the wedding as an event is becoming more diversified.
The AWESOME! Events website, www.awesomeeventsbermuda.com, is an excellent information source, providing detailed descriptions of what the bride can expect. Here, the more traditional bride can select a wedding package and go from there, or, for those feeling adventurous, inquire into customizing any existing plan by making a quick phone call. For an exceptionally unique wedding, choose Poseidon’s Adventure, which offers a ceremony at sea. The three-hour cruise aboard a gorgeous, state-of-the-art yacht offers a selection of entree choices, a digital photographer, and full service bar, along with everything else necessary for a perfect wedding on the water. During 2010, AWESOME! Events will be offering monthly specials, as well as a drawing to win a free wedding. Register on the website to receive an e-news letter. Also, keep an eye out for Phyllis’ new web project, a site called www.justcruisin.com, which will be exclusively geared toward cruise ship weddings. After seeing just how well-rounded Phyllis’ experience is, you’ll want to pick up the phone, call AWESOME! Events, and let Phyllis, as she puts it, “maximize your wedding dollar.”
With so many capable coordinators to choose from, it may be difficult to decide which one best suites your wedding needs. What won’t be difficult is choosing Bermuda as the destination for your wedding. With its renowned pink coral beaches and gorgeous sunsets, the island provides the perfect backdrop for the passion and romance of every wedding.

Brian Murphy proposed to Paige Hunting on a surprise trip to Bermuda in the summer of 2008. “We quickly fell in love with Bermuda’s charm and thought the island’s relaxed beachy feel combined with a bit of English formality suited our personalities,” says Paige.

On May 2, 2009, they married on the island, a splendid party with 64 of their loved ones.
“We wanted a small wedding and thought it would be wonderful to introduce our friends and family to this very special place, as many of our guests had never been to Bermuda before,” Paige says. The planning began in earnest in October 2008, with a trip to Bermuda to convene with wedding planners and consider venues for the big day.
“Cafe Lido was our clear favorite for several reasons,” Paige says, speaking of the gorgeous location overlooking Elbow Beach. “The Marina Terrace was the perfect spot for an outdoor, early evening ceremony as it had beautiful views of the ocean. Our guests were certainly wowed when they arrived.”
Cafe Lido allowed the ceremony to transition smoothly into the reception. Paige and Brian opted for little additional decor as the location’s natural setting was such a sight to behold. “We wanted to host a simple and elegant event where guests could really enjoy the scenery. We held dinner and dancing in Cafe Lido’s open air gazebo, which was the perfect size for our group. Since the weather cooperated, we were able to keep the roof open and see the beautiful night sky,” Paige says. She also speaks highly of Cafe Lido manager Karen Stroeder, citing her professionalism and service.
The Rev. Judith Gardner officiated Paige and Brian’s ceremony. “She was so lovely – very warm and friendly,” Paige says. “We had not had the opportunity to meet in person prior to arriving in Bermuda a few days before the wedding, so we sent her photos and information about us in advance so she could personalize the ceremony.”
Paige and Brian’s nuptials went seamlessly. “I remember being so relaxed and happy during the ceremony,” Paige says. “I wasn’t nervous at all, and it felt so wonderful to have this gorgeous Bermuda sun shining down on us and see all the people I love the most seated before me.”
Between the beauty of the ceremony and the wondrous commotion of the reception, Brian and Paige took a friend’s advice and snuck off for a moment of solitude. They sipped champagne and snacked on hors d’oeuvres. “It gave us a moment to reflect on what an amazing day it had been and gear up for a night of dinner and dancing,” Paige says.
Part of that reflection may have been remembering the cast and crew it took to pull off such a sensational destination wedding. Brian and Paige’s first stop: Linda Mitchell from Bermuda Travel. “We knew that we had to make the wedding weekend travel and
accommodations affordable and convenient for our guests, and Linda’s vast knowledge of Bermuda’s hotels and resorts made our planning much easier. She was a tremendous help to our guests in booking their travel,” Paige says.
Brian and Paige hired Kay-Annie Reid-Young from Kreative Koncepts as their wedding planner. “She was fantastic. It was so reassuring to know she was on the island to help us select vendors and ensure our day would go smoothly. She made us feel at ease with all aspects of the wedding planning,” Paige says. “I remember getting ready to walk down the aisle with my dad before the ceremony and she gave me a big smile and said ‘Don’t worry, you’re ready!’ and I knew that everything was under control in her capable hands.”
Sacha Blackburne handled the day’s photography. “To say she is amazing is an understatement,” Paige says. “She was a dream to work with and produced the most gorgeous wedding photos for us. Sacha made us so at ease and most importantly, made taking all of the photos fun.”

Julie Mayor of Just Roses coordinated the floral side of the festivities. “She was wonderful and made the planning process from New York so easy. The flowers were exactly what I wanted, down to the specific color. My bridal bouquet of pink peonies was just gorgeous,” Paige says. “We did all of our communication by phone and e-mail – we never met in person, and I never even stepped foot in her shop.”
DJ Scott Simons spun tunes at the reception – even though Paige and Brian were so busy before the wedding, they weren’t able to give him a specific playlist. “But he hit the mark with each song. Scott was very easygoing and we completely trusted his judgment on music,” Paige says. “We had to practically drag people off the dance floor, they were having such a good time.”

All 64 guests stayed at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. “Our room logistics were handled by Bior Guigni, who provided us with the most lovely customer service. She went out of her way to ensure we, our families and guests were as comfortable as possible. She was incredibly responsive – we had a question, she had an answer!” Paige says. “I remember when we arrived in Bermuda, a few days before the wedding, she greeted us in the hotel lobby, sat us down at the bar with a gin and tonic and told us to relax and start the celebration! She played a huge role in making our wedding weekend go so smoothly.”

Ivan Smith from On Time Transportation shuttled guests from the hotel to the wedding site. “His service was outstanding – everything was truly ‘on time’ and his enthusiasm for Bermuda was contagious. It was very important for us to ensure our guests had smooth and comfortable travel around the island and Ivan was super,” Paige says.
For each guest, Paige and Brian ordered custom L.L Bean tote bags reading BDA – Bermuda’s airport code – with the date and a pink Bermuda shorts logo. “The Bermuda Tourism Bureau very generously gave us maps, key chains and lapel pins for the bags,” Paige says. “We also printed ‘Facebooks’ that had a photo of each of our guests, their hometown and a funny description of the person so that people could get to know each other better. People loved them.”
For the wedding meal, Paige and Brian “wanted to serve elegant but un-stuffy food and play up Bermuda’s local cuisine.” They hit a home-run with delicious appetizers during cocktail hour, bits like scallops with caramelized pineapple and mini cod-cakes with banana. With dinner came a starter of traditional Bermuda fish chowder or an arugula salad and an entree of fresh catch of the day or beef tenderloin.

And there was the cake, of course. “Cafe Lido’s pastry chef created a beautiful lemon cake with white fondant icing, and was kind enough to wrap a navy and pink – our wedding colors – grosgrain ribbon that we had brought from New York around each tier,” Paige says. “All of the food was delicious and suited our event perfectly.”

All of the wedding vendors worked expertly with Paige and Brian to cultivate a spectacular day. “The reception was a wonderful opportunity to sip champagne, pose for photos with old friends and celebrate the day,” Paige says. “Sacha [Blackburne] took us down to the beach to pose for photos and it was a wonderful feeling to look up at all our guests enjoying cocktails on the terrace during the reception and see that everyone was having a good time.”
The weekend getaway nature of a destination wedding, although something Paige and Brian never envisioned exclusively, completed the experience, making it an event to remember not just for the bride and groom, but for all the family and friends in attendance. “Most weddings go by so fast – a few hours of food and dancing and it’s over,” Paige says. By getting married in Bermuda, we were able to extend our time with our loved ones – all the people we care most about in the world – in one place for an entire weekend.”

Stephanie Lewis and Christopher Pullen met in their senior year of high school, and being together seven years, they wanted to celebrate their wedding in a special way. One planned event turned out perfectly; a second and third act were unscripted, but emerged as winners.

Stephanie explains the train ride, provided by Oleander Cycles, Bermuda Train, “Often people use cars and horse and carriages, but we wanted to be different. The train was slow enough to enjoy the scenic roads. The best part was that 40 family and friends were able to join us, which is something most brides and grooms don’t get. Many of the overseas guests enjoyed it for they were able to take in the gorgeous ocean views along the way. Locals on the roads were waving and honking their horns and wishing us the best the whole way. It was great to have strangers be a part of our day – Bermudians are very friendly and this was a perfect example!’’

Christopher and Stephanie were married on June 13, 2009 at the Holy Trinity Church in Bailey’s Bay. The ceremony was officiated by Reverend Stephen Bailey. As they emerged from the church, a rainbow appeared before them. Who could have planned that!

Another event occurred at the reception, at the Tucker’s Point Clubhouse. As Christopher put it, “Stephanie is a golf pro and after taking some fun shots on the course, the guests gathered on the wraparound porch of the Club and asked her to hit balls. Stephanie naturally obliged and hit balls in her gown. Little did they know she had changed into her golf shoes after the church ceremony which made it easier! We don’t know how many brides have hit balls in their wedding gown, but it was natural that Stephanie would.” That must have been an amusing sight to see. Sometimes it’s the unplanned events which make the reception most memorable.

The newlyweds celebrated their wedding at Tucker’s Point Clubhouse with 120 guests. They sought to turn the reception into a get-acquainted party between the two families and friends, so they orchestrated food stations. As they put it, “We wanted all our guests to mingle and therefore we chose a food station atmosphere over a sit down meal. This allowed family from both sides to meet each other for the first time and share some great stories. We also had lots of family and college friends travel from all over to celebrate with us. We were blessed to have so many people come down. We wanted everyone to be comfortable and relaxed and Tucker’s Point provided the perfect venue for this.” Delectables at the stations included truffle mashed potatoes, sushi, Vietnamese rolls, a carving station, a pasta station and an ice cream bar with cake for dessert.

Chef Serge Botelli of Tucker’s Point Club masterminded the cuisine. To personalize the event, and because Chris is gluten intolerant, “Serge and his team created his own flourless groom’s cake, shaped in a ball and chain.” We’re sure Stephanie and Chris liked that!

Music during the reception was directed by DJ Paul Sofianos. Flowers by GiMi provided the uniquely modern floral display under the auspices of Michelle Geary. “Michelle was incredible, and gave us exactly what we wanted. She was great at capturing our attitude and fun loving spirit. Our guests couldn’t stop raving over her designs and unique touches that made our wedding perfect.” Flowers do so much to exemplify the spirit of an occasion.

Wedding stationary was designed by Christina White who prepared everything from engagement and bridal invitations to programs and thank-you cards. Alisha Gibbons did Stephanie’s make-up and Bang Bang Hair arranged the locks of the bride, mother of the bride and bridesmaids.

“We wanted our day to be preserved perfectly, so an experienced photographer was essential. Chris is very passionate about photography, and knowing Mark’s work, immediately wanted him.” Stephanie goes on. “We chose Mark (Mark Tatem Photography) because his pictures ranged from traditional family photos to very unique candid moments. Mark was very professional and knew exactly how to utilize Bermuda’s natural beauty for our photos. He is incredibly talented and creative. His professional manner put us at ease so we could be ourselves and our pictures came out incredible because of it.” Again, selecting a vendor who knows what you are looking for is essential to meet the desires of the wedding couple.

We asked where the newly weds chose to honeymoon. “When you live in paradise like Chris and I do, many people ask “where do you go for your honeymoon?!” We wanted to go someplace different so we flew to London for two days, then on to Rome for two more. From there we caught the Ruby Princess for a 12 day Mediterranean cruise. Neither of us had been to the Mediterranean, so it was perfect for our honeymoon. We had a fantastic time and were able to experience new places together. That made it super special.”

What can you advise brides about the rewards of a Bermuda wedding? Stephanie planned her wedding with her mother, Debbie Lewis. Stephanie says, “Bermuda is simply breathtaking! When we came out of the church, there was a perfect rainbow outside. That was amazing. Only in Bermuda can this happen! Bermuda has some incredible views which make perfect wedding backdrops.” Having a rainbow greet the happy couple outside the church was certainly a fortuitous moment.

“It’s my favorite place on the planet,” Lisa Reifer says of Bermuda, a spot she’s been visiting her entire life. Both her parents and grandparents honeymooned on the balmy paradise. Lisa and her love of five years, Jeremy, took it a step further with a destination wedding at Tucker’s Point on Nov. 1, 2008.

“It’s amazing. You’ve got cliffs on both sides and then the beach right there,” she says of the spot. The Reifers’ union was a four-day weekend chock full of celebration.

The wedding party was comprised of about 100 guests, Mrs. Reifer says. “It felt much more intimate to have a destination wedding. Not only do the guests really get to know each other, but you get much better quality time with your friends and family.”

With a destination wedding, rather than a bride and groom sharing the experience while their loved ones spectate from church rows and reception tables, the entire wedding party and guest list participates. “It’s a much more amazing experience in the sense that it’s more of a weekend event.” Mrs. Reifer says.

The Thursday-to-Sunday Bermudian excursion included five events: A welcome party on Thursday, a costume cruise for Halloween on Friday, a rehearsal dinner on the Lido Complex’s Marina Terrace, the ceremony and reception Saturday and a brunch Sunday.

The Reifers enjoy an hour-and-a-half flight to Bermuda from their Manhattan home. Mrs. Reifer has vacationed in Bermuda her whole life. She also works for Jet Blue Airlines and had the luxury of flying to Bermuda “four or five” times in the course of the wedding planning. “We were very hands-on in the process,” she says.

“Even though we were fortunate in that we were able to make all those trips to Bermuda, it certainly wasn’t necessary,” Mrs. Reifer
says, attributing this to her “fantastic” wedding planner, Nikki Begg of Bermuda Bride. “I think we could have planned the wedding
just using Nikki without actually being there in person.”

Ms. Begg helped plan all the weekend’s events. “We couldn’t have pulled off everything without her. The rehearsal dinner in and
of itself was almost like a mini-wedding,” Mrs. Reifer says, adding Ms. Begg sent CDs for live music possibilities, websites of boats
for the Friday cruise and photos of flowers regularly through email. “She and her staff helped with everything.”

Mrs. Reifer says she enjoyed putting together the event, adding she thinks a destination wedding requires additional time and effort – energy well worth the final result. She highly recommends working with a wedding planner. “I think that makes a big difference. You have to have faith in your wedding planner.” Linda Mitchell of Bermuda Travel also assisted with hotel arrangements for the Reifers’ guests.

The Reifers held all their nuptial festivities outdoors at Tucker’s Point – from the ceremony to a cocktail hour to a sit-down dinner.
The setting was a sandy beach with a thatched roof overhead. A pool and a dance floor area were nearby. The Tucker’s Point restaurant provided the dinner. “We were looking at a bunch of places in Bermuda, but when we saw Tucker’s Point – the setting is so magnificent, but right behind that, the food is really good,” Mrs. Reifer says. “Serge [Bottelli] is known on the island for being a
great chef.” Mr. Bottelli crafted a delicious meal and a three-layer wedding cake for the Reifers.

Petals, a Bermuda florist Nikki Begg is part of, arranged the wedding’s floral aspects. Mrs. Reifer consulted with Petals in both Bermuda and New York.

With limited options and a high price to bring an off-island band, Lisa and Jeremy opted for a DJ. “He was willing to play anything we wanted,” Mrs. Reifer says of DJ Paul Sofianos, adding that he “got people up and dancing.” For the post-ceremony cocktail hour,
Stephen Crawford played an acoustic guitar on the beach. Becky Spencer photographed the wedding ceremony. New York-based
videographer Seth David Cohen filmed throughout day.

“You have to be flexible with an island destination,” Mrs. Reifer says, “but it’s well worth the unique experience that you and your
guests will have.”

For the bride who opts for a destination wedding in Bermuda, the door opens on a variety of venues, from the small, intimate restaurant to spacious resort accommodations for hundreds of guests. So many options make Bermuda a dream come true for the prospective bride.

With opportunity comes responsibility to select the site most appropriate to the circumstances of your wedding. Many of the resorts and restaurants listed are available for the bride whose choice is based on the distinction and character and amenities of a given site.

These wedding sites are portrayed by size, from small and intimate to expansive and all-inclusive. Each facility claims a spectacular venue, which, being Bermuda, is legitimate. As for cuisine, exquisite dietary delights abound, whether fresh Bermuda fish or a cultural specialty. Chefs eagerly embrace the opportunity to create a unique dish or specific menu for your wedding.

The first five restaurant/resorts are small, catering to a guest list of fifty or fewer. The intimate nature of a small wedding is evident in these sites, with personal attention, a cozy atmosphere, and an intimate setting. If your wedding plans target a smaller gathering, these venues meet your needs.

64º

The new restaurant located in the Club of the Port Royal Golf Course is an oasis of tranquility, coupled with unique Bermudan hospitality, has been specifically designed with you in mind – to create the perfect end to a perfect day. Top chef Troy Smith is at the helm ready to create unforgettable culinary experiences that will be second to none. With succulent grilled steaks, fresh seafood and local home grown produce, the new 64º menu is set to impress. The floor to ceiling temperature-controlled cellar will showcase the world’s best wine, beer and spirits. Our open plan contemporary bar has taken the South Shore view to another level by incorporating dining inside as well on the patio terrace.

In addition, the clubhouse boasts restful lounge area and splendid rooms for private functions.

The Dining Room

The Dining Room is located adjacent to the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. It is owned and managed by Odilio and Natalie Angeli; who also own Ristorante Primavera and the Rustico Restaurant. The Dining Room is located where the Lighthouse Tea Room used to be.

Owner Natalie Angeli, explains a few features of this unique Bermuda restaurant. For a typical wedding, The Dining Room can accommodate 40 people inside, and a hundred outside. For the latter, the “ceremony would normally be outdoors, tented if required.” Regarding dietary specialties, Ms. Angeli notes, “We have a varied menu with cuisines from many countries, but our fresh local fish is excellent.” She considers The Dining Room to
be unique because, “We have arguably the best view in Bermuda, being at the highest point in the island. Apart from that, it would be our attention to detail and service.”

Pompano Beach Club

“The family owned and operated, 75 room Pompano Beach Club is an ideal venue for honeymooners due to its intimate atmosphere and dramatic oceanfront setting on Bermuda’s southwest coast,” according to the resort’s Managing Director, Tom Lamb.

“Pompano often hosts small destination weddings during the September through April time period.”

The resort offers wedding groups a high degree of personalized service, extensive recreational facilities, gourmet cuisine and comfortable ocean view accommodations. Pompano does not have published wedding packages, preferring to give custom pricing to brides and grooms based on the needs and requirements of each bridal couple Mr. Lamb adds, “Pompano has been Trip Advisor’s # 1 ranked Bermuda resort for five consecutive years
and prides itself on its hospitality, facilities and service. Many of their guests return to stay year after year.”

The website for 9 Beaches proclaims it as, “the unexpected Bermuda. You’re in for a first-class vacation experience, but it’s not fancy. Don’t even think about bringing a tie. But flip-flops are required.” 9 Beaches boasts water sports from kayaking to snorkeling and of course nine beaches, “even at high tide!”

“In terms of numbers at a wedding”, says Robin Gilbert, the General Manager, “we can take care of seventy-five people comfortably.” He continues, “With a wedding we have to keep an eye on the weather. We have a large permanent tent, which is fine for inclement weather. As for our menu offerings at a wedding we have to be aware of the likes and dislikes of the many invited guests. Generally the bride and groom prefer to offer
a buffet and we have many selections to choose from. We are always most happy to discuss other menu requests.” Of the ambiance at 9 Beaches, he says, “Our atmosphere is very casual for a very adventurous crowd. We’re not a five-star resort. Smart casual dress is fine, even bare feet!”

“Have a look at the website”, he says, “and see from the photos how wonderful the location is. Lots of information about weddings is on the website as well”.

Cambridge Beaches

Cambridge Beaches is a private, casual timeless retreat in a natural setting, featuring 94 individually decorated cottages, guest rooms and suites, including three luxury private pool suites and beaches on a private peninsula.

Cambridge Beaches boasts that it is, “perfect for romantics of any age. The best of Bermuda can be found here from private beach dinners for two to snorkeling jaunts by catamaran. There is something for everyone.” For the less energetic, one can putter on a croquet lawn, a putting green or relax at the Ocean Spa.

Michelle Forszt, Director of Sales and Marketing, discussed the virtues of Cambridge Beaches. “It specializes in small and intimate events and offers weddings with up to 50 guests.”

Cambridge Beaches offers dining service options both inside and out, in their Sky Deck, Mangrove Bay Room and Aquarian Baths Pool Deck. Mrs. Forszt notes, “Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa is not a typical large high rise resort; it is a timeless sanctuary of luxurious cottage accommodations, sparkling azure seas, endless views and beautiful beaches.” (It does not cater to children under sixteen.)

Fresco’s Group Catering – Restaurant and Wine Bar

Fresco’s Group Catering has three sites on Bermuda for fine dining. Their website claims, “We can host events in any of our locations or go off site to your favorite location. We cater wedding receptions.” Fresco’s encourage brides to “visit our website to view our fabulous dishes.”

Fresco’s Claudio Vigilante describes the cuisine: “our fusion style menu (featuring Mediterranean cuisine tempered with a twist of Bermuda), prepared by our gold medal winning chef. Enjoy your meal on our outdoor patio or in the intimacy of our dining room.” He goes on, “We can do 50 at an indoor wedding. The cuisine is Italian, with fresh, home-made pasta and fresh Bermuda fish.” He describes the charm of Fresco’s is in the setting:
“We are in the old wine cellar that has bolted ceiling and old wine artifacts on the wall.”

Opus defines itself as a ‘chic urban retreat’ where one may savor the finest European coffees, international teas or sample an extensive wine list in an atmosphere suitable for both a cafe and lounge environment, complete with a tapas menu and a walk-in wine cellar. Open daily from early morn to very late evening. It is the perfect place to celebrate with a bottle of champagne or signature drink. Opus is affiliated with Fresco’s Group of Restaurants and can cater your special event or house small gatherings.

Silk offers a blend of dietary delights from Bangkok Thailand, one of the more popular ethnic cuisines infiltrating the taste buds of connoisseurs of fine dining across North America. In Bermuda, Silk is the premier Thai restaurant, serving lunch and dinner through the week. Silk is affiliated with Fresco’s Group of Restaurants and is a perfect setting for rehearsal dinners.

For a mid-size wedding, four resorts, which easily accommodate a wedding guest list in the range of a hundred. These sites are personable, in that the staff develops a friendly relationship with guests, but the space is more roomy and pleasant for a mid-size crowd.

The Reefs

The Reefs, with one of the more exquisite of Bermuda beaches, has the “sole purpose to pamper its guests and put them perfectly at ease.” Their website promotes this small, luxury hotel as “the perfect place to relax and enjoy a romantic escape, or even to get married! Weddings and honeymoons are a favorite reason for staying at The Reefs.”

David Dodwell, Jr., Director of Rooms at The Reefs, discusses weddings. “For weddings, we can accommodate anywhere from an intimate ceremony for two or all the way up to 80. Your reception can either be inside or outside, although everybody wants to be outside overlooking our beautiful beach!”

“Dietary delights are superb,” he says. “We have a wide variety of food from Caribbean to traditional western cuisine in our three different restaurants.” Mr. Dodwell believes what sets The Reefs apart is the “high level of customer service, our gorgeous private beach, and the personal connection that our guests create with the property and staff. Guests really get to know the staff intimately and we have been a family run property for over
thirty years.”

Surf Side Beach Club Hotel

Surf Side is “a unique hideaway and peaceful haven overlooking the ocean on Bermuda’s famous South Shore. While guests can enjoy the personalized service they expect of a boutique hotel, they can also experience the amenities of a larger hotel, including restaurant and bar, beauty salon and mini-spa.”

General Manager Bryony Harvey goes on to explain that the Surf Side can accommodate up to a hundred guests for a wedding. That’s the “absolute maximum!” Generally Surf Side encourages an outdoor setting for the wedding ceremony.

The atmosphere is “casual and low key,” according to Bryony, and the dining room focus is primarily on “European cuisine.” As for specific sites for wedding, Bryony recommends, the “location of the wedding ceremony on our lower terrace close to the water and beach and our personalized service for wedding coordination throughout – one stop shopping!” Surf Side sounds superb: romantic and intimate, a perfect wedding site.

Aqua is located at the Surf Side Beach Club. This restaurant has arguably the finest view in Bermuda from its sunset cliffside terrace. When paired with divine cuisine and superior service, Aqua is a restaurant without par. One reviewer noted it had the most scenic sight in Bermuda, served excellent food and offered perfect service. The Aqua website refers to itself as “definitely good for romantic dinners.” A typical meal might begin with Bermuda fish chowder, with sherry, peppers and black rum. For a main course try black linguini with scallops, shrimp, clams and mussels, served in a light white wine. This restaurant is a diner’s delight.

Coco Reef Resort

Maleia Marsden is General Manager of Coco Reef Resort. For weddings, Coco Reef caters to small events, really small, like two people (!) up to a maximum of 120. “The majority of the time,” she says, “we only have one event at a time going on in the Resort, so the Bride & Groom get our full dedication ensuring them a spectacular day.” Coco Reef wants to ensure an ideal dining experience for their bridal couple. “Our Executive Chef is very
flexible and specializes in American / European Cuisines but has also done weddings with specialty foods such as Indian, Bermudian and even a full Vegan event.” Meals may be served inside, or “al fresco on Tamara’s Terrace which features panoramic ocean views over the swimming pool.”

What sets Coco Reef apart is, “because we offer a more intimate experience than the bigger Resorts. Our staff get to know each guest on a one to one basis and look after them like family. It is also easy to move about our Resort, for example, you do not have to take a shuttle bus to the beach, it is only a short walk down the hill. We are not a convention The website of Coco Reef expounds on the area: “Bermuda is an island of great intrigue and incredible beauty. Coco Reef Resort is set in beautiful tropical gardens with an unrivaled vista overlooking our exquisite beach and Bermuda’s famed turquoise water. It provides the ultimate Atlantic vacation in a casually elegant setting.”

With a larger wedding, more than 150 guests, three sites cater to a good-sized crowd. These resorts know how to manage a banquet hall, understand the logistics of crowd management, and pride themselves on meeting the wishes of the bride and groom in a grand setting, whether on the beach or in an expansive reception center.

Fourways

MiMi Belboda, Group Sales Manger of Fourways Inn, responded to our inquiry about weddings. “We can accommodate 245 people if we do set menu and 200 people if we do buffet.” She adds, “We are known for our French cuisine.” Ms. Belboda notes their Palm Garden area is protected from the weather and ideal for wedding ceremonies, while “our Rose Garden (is) outside for weddings.”

What sets Fourways apart, according to Ms. Belboda, “I would say the food, service and ambiance. We have a beautiful garden setting for a destination wedding, but most of our weddings are local.” Readers’ comments note Fourways is known for a peaceful, quiet atmosphere with an attentive staff. It is both charming and quaint, with a dose of historic charm, as the main inn was constructed in 1727.

Lido Restaurant

The Lido Restaurant is situated on the Sea Terrace of the Elbow Beach Hotel in Paget, located right above the beach and offering breathtaking views and sophisticated oceanfront dining with modern ambiance. The site boasts, “indoor and outdoor venues for all occasions, and the menus have an innovative mix of seafood specialties with Mediterranean touches. The restaurant is a popular, smart, casual choice for an evening of impeccable service, a superb wine list and stunning ocean views.” The restaurant is part of a larger complex of three operations under one umbrella, the others being a tapas and sushi lounge and an “on the sand” bistro style restaurant – Mickey’s, as well as an oceanfront private function terrace. Lido Complex is part of the larger Little Venice Group, which operates a number of Bermuda’s finest dining establishments.

Fairmont Southampton

“Fairmont is a leader in the global hospitality industry,” according to their website, “with a distinctive collection and a worldwide reputation for excellence.” As part of a large chain of hotels, “central purchasing ensures the same high-quality amenities are available to all guests wherever they visit.” The website concludes that “every Fairmont hotel an extraordinary place, and your stay, an extraordinary experience.”

Peter Frith, Director of Sales at the Fairmont Southampton, assists with wedding planning. “We have the ability to accommodate up to 800 people and to prepare gala events. We have many options for weddings of various sizes, but our average wedding is 100 – 125 people. We can have a wedding indoors or outdoors but about 85% of our clients request the beach. We can do the wedding right on the sand and with a purpose-built terrace, a concrete platform with lights, for the reception.” He goes on, “We are known for our wide variety of food and we pride ourselves in customizing whatever the bride and groom want.

We have over fifteen countries represented in our culinary staff. Our most popular comment is how fabulous the food is with such a superb international culinary team.”

The variety of venues makes it a challenge to choose the right site for a destination wedding in Bermuda. Each resort or restaurant has a special claim to fame, and is worthy in its own right. Word of mouth is helpful, but so is an examination of each venue to ensure their capability to provide just what you want and need to make your wedding special. We feel comfortable recommending any one of these resorts or restaurants for their services. A wedding is a unique opportunity to select the best of the best to make your day memorable in every way. These sites are ready to respond to your request.

Flowers signify a multitude of emotions and feelings. They can represent a symbol of love, sympathy and celebration that are experienced during important moments in our lives, especially on our wedding day.

Flowers signify a multitude of emotions and feelings. They can represent a symbol of love, sympathy and celebration that are experienced during important moments in our lives, especially on our wedding day.

The combination of colorful, fragrant flowers tied together in a bouquet and as a lavish arrangement for a table centerpiece can make a perfect day that more significant. Even with a picturesque backdrop as attractive as Bermuda, flowers still play a very important role on your wedding day.

Some of the local florists and designers have shared some of their knowledge and advice for brides to be in the upcoming season.

Lisa Holroyd of Designer Flowers offers a romantic look for your ceremony, “… beach chic for the ceremonies, lots of flowing white fabric with pops of colorful flowers and twig details, simple decoration for the aisles with vines and local ferns with pops of colors again.”

Lisa states that, “some of the popular flowers that are being requested are orchids, callas and of course, roses. Bright arrangements in champagne, yellow, orange, red and lime greens are great for the reception centerpieces.”

Although there isn’t much of a selection for local flowers, Lisa says even if a bride is working within a budget or just wants to include some local flavor, Frangipani is a very simple yet beautiful flower that is requested often and is a great addition to any bouquet.

Julie Mayor, owner of Just Roses, finds blue is a popular color for this season as well as lavender, pink and green. Some couples decide on “black and white” weddings which “allows (the bride) to really splash out with lots of color with the flowers.”

Some brides also choose to stay simple and clean with fabulous bouquets in white or cream with combinations of green. Some are choosing to bring back a popular trend from the “80’s” selecting earth tones for their arrangements.

In addition to the traditional bridal bouquets and table centerpieces Julie states that brides request plants to be included in various areas for their ceremonies and receptions. Julie mentions, “We have lined the aisle for a beach wedding with potted flowers which were grown to coordinate with the color scheme.”

When brides request a “beach feel” Julie mentions a wedding Just Roses did from the previous summer, “we decorated the tables at the reception with dried willow tips, beach glass, sea shells, various heights of pillar candles and Makara orchids, Cymbidium orchids and Gloriosa flowers placed amongst the dried willow tips. The tables had a very natural, drift wood beach feel to them and the bride was thrilled with the result.”

Marguerite Clark, director at Petals also says that white/ivory flowers mixed with beautiful Bermuda green foliage appears to be the upcoming trend for Spring and Summer 2010. Popular floral selections include, “Hydrangea, peonies, orchids, hyacinth, double freesia, tulips, mini calla lilies and Casablanca lilies,” states Marguerite. Although local flowers choices are limited, there is beautiful foliage available – Spanish moss, palm husk, palm, aspidistra and bay grape leaves to name a few.

Whether your reception tables are round, square or rectangular, a variation of tall and low vases, cylindrical, square or oblong are popular and candles are also a great complement to any table arrangement.

If you are working on a tight budget this season, Marguerite mentions that, “it is important to advise us as early as possible so we can assist (the couple) with more cost effective alternatives and design individual floral pieces that best suit the client’s personality.”

No matter what you choose for your wedding day, local professionals are here to help with any requests they are given. Try to contact your florist early and give them any ideas you may have so they can combine their talents with your vision and create an incredible ambiance for your special day Good Luck and Congratulations.
